Friend of mine I know from back in the day asked me why I don’t post about comics much here and I said it’s because ever since I proved what I wanted to in the industry I don’t really care about funnybooks that I’m not writing or my close friends are doing. Every once in a while some dipshit from the old days will say “Remember when you were kind of in comics?” like it’s some kind of dig and I laugh and laugh and laugh. I was never IN comics, really. I crashed that party and did what I wanted and gave my friends their careers and then left all that adolescent political infighting to go back to what they were doing after I peed all over everything. YOU’RE WELCOME.
That said, she asked me my favorite comics works of all time and, as a fan, I said
AMERICAN FLAGG! 1-12
All of CEREBUS
Anything Walt Simonson draws, but especially the DETECTIVE back-up MANHUNTER and his THOR run
ALPHA FLIGHT 1-12
KAMANDI
Kubert’s UNKNOWN SOLDIER
STRANGERS IN PARADISE
Anything Jaime drew in LOVE AND ROCKETS
AKA GOLDFISH
Buscema’s SAVAGE SWORD
ZOT!
THE JAM
Tony DeZuniga’s JONAH HEX
Mike Allred’s DEAD AIR
Alex Toth’s ZORRO
LIBERTY MEADOWS
FLAMING CARROT
Matt Wagner’s Comico Primer and the first three B&W GRENDELs
Baron and Rude’s NEXUS
and, seriously, Charlie Adlard on ASTRONAUTS IN TROUBLE. That stuff is perfect. Exactly what I want out of a comic.
… which, you know, is exactly why I don’t care about comics anymore. Whatever is happening now has left me behind, and I get my zings out of the TV and the movies, now. Sorry, comics. I was never really in you, anyway. It was just the tip.
